Major Industry & Employment Sectors
Dynamic Opportunities exist in Greater Milwaukee's employment sectors. Greater Milwaukee's emerging biotech and IT businesses offer people the ability to make a difference in young, fast growth companies. Highly technical and managerial positions are also available in some of the more traditional sectors including printing and manufacturing.   Biotechnology
Wisconsin is one of the leading states for biomedical technology research and start-ups, with an estimated 300 companies in this sector. Over 1,800 firms employing over 42,000 workers are involved in medical devices and bioinformatics. Leading the biotech research in the Greater Milwuaukee area is The Medical College of Wisconsin which places 2nd in Wisconsin behind world renowned UW-Madison's biotechnology research, located just 40 miles west of the area. Key areas of research at the Medical College of Wisconsin include boinformatics, biophysics, biostatics, human molecular genetics and bioethics.
  Education
Greater Milwaukee's outstanding educational institutions include five University of Wisconsin campuses, ten private colleges and four technical colleges. A recent study from McGill University in Montreal ranks Milwaukee as 6th in a list of U.S. and Canadian cities with the highest number of college students per 100 residents. Greater Milwaukee also boasts a fine public school system along with a strong private school environment. Education professionals in Wisconsin are dedicted to excellence. Wisconsin students are among the brightest in the nation. Their scores rank among the highest on knowledge and concept examinations given in grades four, six, eight, and 10.
  Financial Services
Establishments within the financial/insurance industry in Greater Milwaukee number over 3,000, employing 57,600 people. Large financial service companies headquartered in Greater Milwaukee include Northwestern Mutual, Marshall & Illsley Corp., Robert W. Baird & Company, and Strong Capital Management. Greater Milwaukee is the nation's leader in electronic financial and information management.
  Health Care
There are over 3,600 health care establishments in Greater Milwaukee, employing nearly 100,000 people. Aurora Health Care, Covenant Healthcare System, and Columbia-St. Mary's rank among the area's largest health care employers.
  Manufacturing
Greater Milwaukee has long been one of the nation's premier manufacturing centers. Over 19% of the area's workforce are employed in manufacturing, significantly higher than the 13% national rate. Nearly 4,000 manufacturing establishments are located in Greater Milwaukee, employing 207,000 people. Major manufacturers in the area include Daimler Chrysler, Johnson Controls, SC John & Son, and Rockwell Automation.
  Printing
Greater Milwaukee ranks as one of the nation's largest commercial printing centers. It is being revolutionized by new digital technologies with many press operators being replaced by knowledge workers. Employment in Greater Milwaukee's over 400 printing establishments totals 15,600. Key printing companies in the area include Quad/Graphics, Serigraph, and the Arandell Corp.
  Software Development
Combined, there are over 130 software development and data processing establishments in Greater Milwaukee employing almost 6,000 people. This sector is growing rapidly and is supported by some dynamic non-profit organizations including eInnovate and Wisconsin Information Technology Leadership Association. Representative companies in the field include Fiserv, Metavante, eFunds, Catalyst, and RedPrairie Corp. (formerly McHugh Software).
  Tourism
Tourism is Wisconsin's second largest industry, accounting for close to $10 billion per year. Over $3.2 billion of that is spent in the Greater Milwaukee area for things such as arts and culture, restaurants and shopping, outdoor recreation and sporting events. The tourism industry employs over 89,000 full time workers. One of the most attractive events in Milwaukee for tourists is Summerfest. Summerfest is the world's largest outdoor music festival, drawing nearly one million visitors to Milwaukee's lakefront each year.
